Allowable Rent Increases Under the RSO

This bulletin provides an overview of how rent may be increased through: vacancy decontrol, the annual allowable rent increase, additional tenants, recovery of registration fees from tenants, recovery of SCEP fees from tenants, the temporary rent surcharges for smoke and/or carbon monoxide detector installations, capital improvements, seismic retrofit work, rehabilitation work, the permanent rent increase for primary renovation work, and the permanent rent increase for properties whose net operating income fails to cover operating expenses. The annual allowable rent increase incorporates an allowance for gas and electricity and explains the term, maximum adjusted rent.
